Texas-sized Aquifer District Hears All Hat and No Cattle Presentation from Industry

Earlier today the Pavement Coating Technology Council (PCTC) presented their version of coal tar sealant reality to the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA).  The EAA, with a potential effected jurisdiction over 1 million, is considering a ban of coal tar pavement sealants in an area that covers portions of several counties in sensitive groundwater recharge areas.  They expect to rule on it by the end of the year.

Toxic Trail Across the US, a Coal Tar Sealer Infographic

If I had one graphic to convey the key ideas about what we know today about coal tar sealant pollution, this is it.  It contains videos, stats and key headlines that have covered this topic in the last few years.  If you don't want to watch a video, just "click" again.

The idea here is to encompass the core ideas of this issue for readers to get the main message in short order.  That is what an "infographic" is.  Feel free to share this with others.  Here is the link to email to others:

The High Cost of Cheap Coal Tar

Would you ever buy something that costs 45 times the purchase price to cleanup?  Not in your right mind, would you.  But pond cleanup costs, calculated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and extrapolated here to a per gallon cost, show that the application of coal tar sealants is just like this.  The costs go from about $3 per gallon to over $135 per gallon!!  If those costs were true across the US, the annual cleanup costs for the 85 million gallons used per year would be over $11 Billion!!

Ironically the true costs of coal tar sealants are similar to re-paving with brand new asphalt!
